Do your bit to prevent fires

Wellington Shire Council is anxious to ensure the Shire’s towns are kept as safe as possible from fires this year as it calls on owners of vacant land in townships to help minimise the fire risk in their community.

By Wellington Shire Council - 26th November 2003 - Back to News

The Council will be issuing fire prevention notices to owners of vacant land in the coming weeks, with those targeted having 21 days to cut, slash and clear their land.

The notices will be issued in instances where land represents a real danger because it has become seriously overgrown and now presents a fire risk.

By taking prompt action now, property owners can prevent possible tragedy during the fire season.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "Some residents have contacted us concerned by the state of land on neighbouring properties and the resulting fire risks. They can rest assured that we have been working hard across the Shire to contact all owners of property that needs attention.

"In addition we have several contractors slashing roadsides identified as strategic fire breaks within the Council’s Municipal Fire Prevention Plan. This comes on top of Wellington’s normal roadside maintenance.

"Thanks to new technology, including a laptop computer linked to mapping software and special global positioning equipment, it’s now much easier for us to identify blocks of land that need a fire prevention notice, which means we can respond rapidly and provide good protection to the community."
