at a function held at Richmond Town Hall.

In the third two-yearly ‘Charter awards to Local Government’, hosted by the City of Yarra, Latrobe City received the award for its initiatives and achievements in promoting women’s formal and informal civic participation in local decision making; in particular, moves towards council’s formal adoption of the Women’s Charter.

Judges selected one local government in metropolitan Melbourne and one in rural/regional Victoria

Latrobe City councillor, Cr Lisa Price, said the event provided an opportunity to showcase the work that is being done around the state to implement the Charter.

"Created in 1996 and reviewed in 2003, it supports women’s civic and political participation, and strengthens local government’s action on the Victorian Human Rights and Responsibilities Charter 2006," Cr Price explained.

In declaring Latrobe City the ‘Rural Local Government’ winner, the judges noted Latrobe City’s initiative to endorse the Victorian Local Government Women’s Charter and support possibly the first regional adoption of the Charter through the Gippsland mayors. "The initiative builds on Latrobe’s ‘Women in Democracy Working Group," Cr Price said.

"The Minister also mentioned that the judges were impressed with Latrobe’s ‘Living Library’ event held at the Latrobe Regional Gallery in August. The event was a celebration in relation to the Centenary of Victorian Women’s Suffrage where key local women speakers talked about their experiences in advocacy, democracy and making a difference," Cr Price added.

The City of Darebin was judged ‘Metropolitan Local Government’ winner: for its ‘Women’s Policy and Gender Equity’ initiative. The Darebin initiative aims to embed three priorities in council plans, with judges assessing the priorities as increasing the participation of women in decision making, achieving equal opportunity in council’s workforce and reducing family violence.
