Future sport and recreation needs being assessed

Latrobe City Council is actively working to assess future sport and recreation service needs in the municipality by conducting a sport and recreation planning survey in conjunction with Stratcorp Consulting.

By Latrobe City Council - 19th March 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Richard Hancock said that the planning study will identify the direction and action that Latrobe City will need to undertake in order to provide the necessary sport and recreation facilities, services and programs for the next 10 to 15 years. "This will form an important part of the Latrobe 2021 Strategy Plan," Mr Hancock said.

"Stratcorp Consulting, a recreation and sport planning group, is currently liaising with local sport and recreational clubs, as well as Latrobe citizens, to conduct a range of surveys, one-on-one interviews, community forums, workshops and meetings that will determine the sport and recreational needs of the local community," Mr Hancock said.

"The consulting group will also conduct a questionnaire available on Latrobe City Council’s website from 1 April 2004 that will seek information on participation in sport and exercise in the local area and will survey future aspirations for recreational activities in Latrobe City."

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, called on all Latrobe City residents to participate in the questionnaire.

"Latrobe City Council is making a conscious effort to ensure that the sport and recreational facilities and services that are offered in Latrobe City meet the needs of local residents, and will do so for years to come."

"I urge everyone to visit Council’s website and participate in the Stratcorp Consulting questionnaire from 1 April so that the views, opinions and needs of everyone in the municipality can be considered when deciding the future of sport and recreation in Latrobe City," Cr Middlemiss said.

"In the same way that recreation has been strongly influenced by changes in equipment technology and changing lifestyle aspirations during the last 20 years, we are likely to face massive changes in the future, if only because of the general ‘ageing’ of the population."

According to the Commission for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), the number of Australians over 65 years of age will more than double over the next fifty years, and this change will no doubt create revised demands.

"The steps that Latrobe City Council takes now can ensure that generations in the future have adequate sport and recreational services and that these facilities and services meet the needs of a changing Australian demographic," Cr Middlemiss concluded.
