Gippsland employers encouraged to take on Indigenous trainees

Employers throughout Gippsland have been encouraged to consider taking on indigenous trainees following a successful bid by Latrobe City Council to attract funding to facilitate Indigenous employment programs across the Gippsland region.

By Latrobe City Council - 13th August 2003 - Back to News

The facilitation follows the success of a program organised in 2001 where Latrobe City, with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), undertook to employ twelve participants from the Indigenous Employment Program over a three year period.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that the funding, supported by the Commonwealth Government’s Indigenous Employment Program, and administered by DEWR, will offer employment to more than 40 participants over a three-year period.

"Latrobe City will act as a facilitator providing financial assistance and job ready participants to employers across Gippsland, while undertaking cross-cultural training and mentoring support. The overall aim is to develop and deliver a mentoring process within the Indigenous community that will foster the development of role models," Cr Middlemiss said.

"It is intended that this project will continue to increase indigenous numbers in employment across Gippsland and expand the occupational skills of the local community in employment creation, as well as increasing training opportunities in Gippsland," Cr Middlemiss said.

"In particular, I’d like to encourage local business and industry to take on indigenous trainees. There is an under-representation of indigenous apprentices in the trades that could be overcome by more employers recognising the benefits of employing indigenous trainees and apprentices," Cr Middlemiss said.

Latrobe City’s Coordinator Employment Development, Joanne Brunt, said that as part of its facilitation role, Council will provide an accredited, comprehensive pre-employment training program.

"The training is an accredited course in Planning for Employment and will encompass selected competencies in personal effectiveness. It will be conducted in early October in the Morwell, Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance and Orbost areas," Ms Brunt explained.

"Other municipalities, such as Wellington and East Gippsland Shires, along with a number of major employers in the region have committed themselves to employing Indigenous people in the workplace. To date East Gippsland Aboriginal Co-operative in conjunction with East Gippsland Council has employed trainees in administration, Wellington Council has also employed a trainee in administration, and Eastern Victorian Group Training has also employed an apprentice in building and construction," Ms Brunt said.

Cr Middlemiss said that Latrobe City’s Indigenous Employment Program had been widely acknowledged for its achievements, winning the 2002 NAIDOC DEWR Award.

"It was also commended in the National Local Government Awards, and Joanne Brunt received the Excellence in Leadership Award at the 2003 Diversity in Excellence Awards," Cr Middlemiss said.

"Latrobe City is aiming to employ a ratio of 2% Indigenous staff and to date we have employed eight participants. This new funding will help create further opportunities both here in Latrobe City and elsewhere in Gippsland," Cr Middlemiss said.

"However, to provide maximum benefits across Gippsland, the program needs employers across the region to come forward," Cr Middlemiss added.
