Newhaven Reuses Water

Bass Coast Shire Council and Newhaven Primary School joined forces in a successful application to the Federal Government’s Community Water Grants Program.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 9th August 2006 - Back to News

The project aims to reuse water to maintain the grounds and garden beds at Newhaven Recreation Reserve and Newhaven Primary School.

Council’s Arts and Leisure Coordinator, Jenny Churchill said the project was a very important one for Council and the school.

"Improving water use is a big issue in Victoria, particularly with the below average rainfall and low water storage levels."

"This project will use treated effluent to maintain the Recreation Reserve and School grounds," said Ms Churchill.

"It will save 1,214,000 litres of water each year."

Ms Churchill confirmed that existing outlets on the Reserve and school grounds would be connected to the treated water supply.

"The impact on the upkeep of the reserve will be considerable," said Ms Churchill.

"We made a concerted effort not to use normal drinking water on the reserve due to issues with our current water supply.

"However, this has been to the detriment of the grounds and playing surfaces," Ms Churchill continued.

"The opportunity to use reuse water will enhance the condition of the grounds all year round."

Federal Member for Flinders, Greg Hunt MP, was on hand at Newhaven Primary School to announce the funding.
