Feedback Will Be Considered On Henry Street Trees

Latrobe City Council will consider all feedback from residents in Henry Street Traralgon and the community at large, before making any decision on the future of Henry Street’s pin oak trees,

By Latrobe City Council - 22nd February 2007 - Back to News

Latrobe City chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, has said.

Mr Buckley gave the undertaking following considerable interest expressed by residents and community groups supporting retention of the trees.

A letter recently distributed to Henry Street residents identified a line of pin oak trees in the street as ‘inappropriate’, suggesting the trees were earmarked for replacement.

Pin oaks line both sides of Henry Street and can grow to 25 metres in favourable conditions. However, on one side of Henry Street the trees have to be severely pruned by council each season to prevent seasonal growth interfering with overhead power lines in the street. As such, they can never reach their natural potential.

Latrobe City deputy mayor, David Wilson, said that while nowadays pin oaks would not be considered for planting in such circumstances, the existing Henry Street streetscape had been planted more than half a century ago and had become somewhat iconic.

"This is an issue where we are unlikely to have one-hundred per cent agreement for either retention or removal of the trees. That’s why we have to very carefully consider the opinions of those people living in Henry Street itself, and those in the community with an interest in the trees or a knowledge of heritage issues associated with the trees.

Before making any decision, council will also need to consider what alternative options to removal may be available, such as aerial bundling of the power lines which means using an insulated cable which then allows tree growth closer to the power line, or even the existing status quo," Cr Wilson said.

"I urge anyone with an opinion on the Henry Street trees to write to council (PO Box 264, Morwell 3840) or use the ‘Feedback’ facility on council’s website www.latrobe.vic.com.au. That way, when the time comes for a decision, council can consider all the facts at hand and make an informed decision that reflects the wishes of our community," Cr Wilson added.
