Fires In Gippsland

Of the 14 fires started by lightning in Gippsland over the weekend, nine have been contained or brought under control, five are still going.

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 21st November 2007 - Back to News

All the fires are in remote areas and all are less than four hectares in size. There is currently no threat to private property.

The fires are at:

North Buldah, six kilometres north of Buldah (going)

Black Jack, 14 kilometres east of Buldah (going)

Mealing Hill, five kilometres west of Wangarabelle (going)

Three Mile, south of Wangarabelle (going)

Turntables, 12 kilometres north west of Cann River (going)

Serpentine, three kilometres south west of Cann River (contained)

Soda Creek, 16 kilometres east of Cann River (contained)

Springs Track, 12 kilometres south east of Gelantipy (contained)

Brodribb River, 30 kilometres north east of Orbost (contained)

Tonghi, four kilometres west of Cann River (under control)

Dawson Track, seven kilometres north of Buchan (under control)

Tingaringy, 24 kilometres north west of Bendoc (under control)

Thomson River, 12 kilometres west of Aberfeldy (under control)

Thomson Dam spillway, 24 kilometres north of Rawson (under control)

DSE’s Regional Duty Officer, Andy Gilham said today’s forecast high temperatures and winds will make conditions difficult for firefighters.

"The fires of most concern are in remote, steep country in the Coopracambra National Park, close to the New South Wales border," Mr Gilham said.

"They are inaccessible by vehicles or ground crews, but the rappelers are currently working on the North Buldah fire and are confident of having it contained today."

Aircraft and rappel crews will also be attending to the fire at Black Jack, east of Buldah today.

Additional resources will be deployed to the fires over the next two days while weather conditions remain hot and windy and reconnaissance aircraft will continue to patrol for any new fires.
