Mapping Bass Coast’s biolinksBass Coast Shire Council is seeking community input on its plan to map the existing areas of native bushland across the Shire, and identify linkages that will provide key environmental corridors. By Portal Admin - 27th February 2017 - Back to News The Biodiversity Biolinks Plan aims to highlight these passageways that are vital to increasing the amount of habitat in the region and allow flora and fauna to move from place to place.
Council is working in partnership with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and the West Gippsland Cathment Management Authority (WGCMA), who have mapped the health and location of native vegetation in the Shire and identified proposed biolinks.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothefield, said that the biolinks plan is instrumental in protecting and developing the Shire’s natural environment.
"The biolinks plan will guide our future revegetation and remnant protection projects, and provide a strategic, planned approach by identifying where the greatest environmental return for investment exists," Cr Rothfield said.
Community workshops are being held in March to gather feedback on these maps and invite conversations on identifying key linkages from the maps and potential challenges.
There will be three workshops focussing on the Powlett, Anderson Inlet and Coastal Plains regions, Bass Valley and waterline communities, and Phillip Island region.
The workshops will be held on:
Thursday, 9 March from 12.00pm to 3.00pm – Kernot Hall, Kernot
Friday 17 March from 12.00pm to 3.00pm – State Coal Mine, Wonthaggi
Wednesday 29 March from 12.00pm to 3.00pm – Phillip Island Winery, 414 Berrys Beach Rd, Ventnor
