Outward Bound Australia praised by Darren Chester for their effort to revitalise Gippsland outdoor education
Outward Bound Australia aims to revitalise Gippsland's outdoor education by reopening its Snowy River site in Bete Bolong North. Damaged by bushfires, with COVID-19 challenges, reconstruction was aided by a Federal grant.
Outward Bound Australia aims to re-establish Gippsland as a key player in outdoor education with the long-anticipated return of programs at its Snowy River site in Bete Bolong North. Outward Bound's Snowy River site, between Buchan and Orbost, suffered extensive damage in the Black Summer bushfires, with the direct consequences of COVID-19 further compounding challenges.

Outdoor education revival
The outdoor education providers were determined to recover, and with the assistance of a Federal Government grant as part of the Bushfire Recovery Program, the staff have successfully reconstructed base camp facilities and equipment.
Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester attended Friday's official re-opening and congratulated those involved with Outward Bound Australia's Snowy River redevelopment, citing the new and improved facilities as an exciting boost for the region. "Providing opportunities for young people to learn new skills, develop their leadership and teamwork abilities, and take on challenges in the outdoors has enormous long-term benefits," Mr Chester said.
"Outward Bound is the world's largest outdoor experiential learning organisation, and having a facility on the banks of the Snowy River is good for our region. Many young people would not have the chance to undertake programs like white water rafting, ropes courses and camping in the outdoors without Outward Bound. More time learning through experiences outdoors and less time in front of computer screens is undoubtedly good for us all, young and old," he said.
