The Latrobe City playground Improvement Plan 2011-2016 has been adopted by Council following Monday night’s Council meeting.

By Latrobe City - 12th May 2011 - Back to News

This new plan sets out the next 5 year playground improvement program commencing in the 2011/2012 financial year.

Latrobe City Mayor, councillor Darrell White explained that the plan formed part of the Latrobe City Playground Strategy, adopted in 2006, which is a 15 year plan that aims to address the current and future provision of playgrounds in the municipality.

"Since the adoption of the Playground Strategy in 2006, more than $600,000 has funded upgrades of 25 playgrounds across the municipality. During this time there have also been 11 removals of equipment to consolidate and reduce duplication of playgrounds.

"The adoption of this new plan by Council now means that a further 30 playgrounds across the City will be upgraded and 10 will be removed over the next 5 years, further enhancing the quality of our playground network.

"Works planned for the 2011/12 financial year include 4 playground upgrades at, Apex Park Glengarry, Hubert Osborne Park Traralgon, Grant Court Traralgon and Centenary Park Yinnar.

"There are also shade sail replacements and repairs planned for Sir Frank McFarlane Burnet Reserve Traralgon, Glendonald Park Churchill, Beattie Crescent Morwell, Access for All Abilities playground in Moe, Boolarra Railway Park Boolarra and Yallourn Lions Park Yallourn North.

"Playgrounds removals will take place at Freeman Park East Traralgon, Ford Park Traralgon and O’Mara Park Traralgon. These playgrounds are in small parks with dated equipment and have better equipped playgrounds in close proximity. Prior to removal, signs will be erected and notification placed in the LV Express Council notice board.

"Community consultation played a large and important role in the final details of the adopted plan. Over a ten week consultation period a number of submissions were received that changed the plan significantly.

For example the Churchill community advocated retaining of the White Parade and Walker Parade playgrounds in Churchill. Both of these facilities will now remain. Feedback from the Yinnar community means Latrobe City will upgrade the Centenary Park playground with a combination of new equipment and some older equipment from the CWA Park playground which will now be relocated," Cr White said.

"Playgrounds are an important part of family life in Latrobe City and the plan that has been adopted will help to make sure that our community playgrounds are in tip-top shape for our children and families into the future," Cr White concluded.
