Mosquito control program gets underway

Wellington Shire Council has just kicked off its annual mosquito control program which will see Mosquito Monitors patrolling the shire and targeting known mosquito breeding areas between now and April.

The program’s main focus is to reduce potential public health risks associated with some species of disease-carrying mosquitos, by identifying breeding sites, noting numbers and treating larvae where necessary.

Residents and visitors to coastal areas are advised to wear loose, protective clothing, and apply DEET-based repellent to exposed skin to avoid being bitten. DEET is an active ingredient used in most insect repellents to keep mosquitos away.

Wellington’s Environmental Health Co-ordinator, Allan Watson stresses that while the council is taking necessary precautions to help control mosquito breeding, the community can also assist by implementing preventative measures on their properties.

"Keeping yards tidy and free of water-carrying containers, regularly mowing grass and filling in areas that collect low-lying water are all effective ways of keeping mosquito breeding at bay," Mr Watson said.

Further information on mosquito control can be obtained by contacting Wellington Shire Council’s Environmental Health Unit on 1300 366 244.
