According to Kidsafe, one child is run over in the driveway of their home every week in Australia.

"This is a tragic statistic," said council chief executive officer Mr Glenn Patterson.

"Studies have tested the rear vision of a number of popular cars and results show that there is a large "blind zone" behind most cars.

"Families and parents need to be aware of how dangerous this blind zone is," said Mr Patterson.

Council has visited five kindergartens running sessions with both children and parents.

According to council’s community development officer, Leslie Smith, the program, developed by VicRoads, has been well received.

"We have Thingle Toodle – a road safety mascot come and help reinforce the ‘Stop, Look, Listen and Think’ message with the children and talk about safe places to play.

"Parents are often amazed by how big the blind spot really is when we demonstrate the size of it to them – I think the session is a reality check for some parents," said Ms Smith.

Research indicates the high incident of injury and death on home or farm driveways is a key road statistic, particularly for children under three years.

The driveway safety program aims to reduce these statistics and is targeted at both children and adults.

Baw Baw Shire Council, through its community safety program aims to provide the driveway safety program to kindergartens on an annual basis.
