Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange earns praise for its high animal welfare standards and compliance with animal protection laws
The Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange is lauded for its animal welfare standards after an independent assessment, showing a commitment to excellence in livestock trading.
The Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange has been recognised for high standards of animal welfare following an independent assessment carried out by an organisation that works with authorities to ensure compliance with existing laws, and advocate for the protection of farm animals at markets, saleyards and during transportation.

Livestock exchange improvements
Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange has been in operation for over 60 years and since undergoing a $3M redevelopment, provides a modern, well-maintained facility for buying and selling livestock. The purpose of the visit was to observe the condition of the cattle offered for sale, check provision of water, penning densities and how cattle are handled. An independent vet also attended to assess compliance with animal welfare laws.
On the day, representatives observed over 1,300 cattle being offered for sale - the largest sale in over five years. Since the beginning of 2024 and with the addition of another livestock agency, Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange has seen a large jump in throughput.
From the visit, Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange was provided guidance on some key areas including stock densities and extra animal welfare signage. They were also commended for their respectful and considerate treatment of cattle and encouraged to continue with efforts to improve on the already high standard of management at the saleyards.
Agricultural sector growth
Wellington Shire Council Mayor Ian Bye acknowledged the positive outcomes saying, "We understand the importance of maintaining high standards for animal welfare and appreciate the work of the Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange team."

We are also very pleased to see a strong increase in numbers at Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange and are ready to accommodate even more producers who chose to sell through their local yards," he said.
