Strategy plan being developed by Council for 2021

Latrobe City Council is developing a strategy plan for the year 2021, identifying issues and projecting changes likely to impact on those issues throughout the intervening years.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 8th July 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said the ‘Latrobe City 2021 Strategy Plan’ took a visionary long-term approach to planning, to ensure Latrobe City and the region was well prepared to meet the future, through complementary policies and strategies.

"While many of us plan in detail for the financial year ahead and perhaps the next three or four years, we need to think and plan even further ahead if we are to take advantage of the future," Mr Buckley said.

"Governments at many levels are embarking on longer-term strategy plans that take change into account. It is important to do this to ensure that decisions made through the intervening years by local councils and a broad range of government departments, contribute positively to our own and our children’s quality of life. Latrobe City is at the forefront of that longer-term planning," Mr Buckley explained.

"The community is changing considerably, in areas such as aging, economic resources and environmental issues. The Latrobe City 2021 Strategy Plan, which Latrobe City in cooperation with government departments, agencies, industry and the community is developing, will provide the community with a picture of what Latrobe City will look like and be like in the future.

"Latrobe City needs to plan for the future to ensure that it has the services, facilities and strategies in the municipality to cater for the aspirations of the community," Mr Buckley said.

"Research and community input has already identified a number of key issues that are important for the future.

The top ten issues are: A safe environment for children; Good schools; Good public transport; Secure, satisfying, fairly paid jobs for all who want them; Freedom from crime and violence; Young people valued and having secure future prospects here; Respect for the environment and a clean, green environment; Respect for different lifestyles; Disadvantaged people cared for; and People fit and healthy.

"To address the community’s aspirations, Latrobe City is already developing key indicators within the strategy plan to monitor the level of community progress against these top ten issues," Mr Buckley said.

Mr Buckley said that partnerships with key stakeholders, industry and the community were being further developed to accelerate progress with the strategy plan.

"Initial discussions with State Government departments and key stakeholders regarding Latrobe City’s 2021 Strategy Plan have already proved very positive," Mr Buckley said.

"We will also be embarking on further community engagement in August, when a draft plan will be circulated to a broad range of groups in the community.

"Their input into the process is vital, to ensure that the decisions we make now and over the next seventeen years, produce the very best outcomes for Latrobe by the time the year 2021 materialises," Mr Buckley added.
