Outstanding contributions to local community acknowledged on Australia day

This year’s Australia Day has brought special recognition to four Shire residents and three local community groups, as Wellington Shire Council announces the winners of its annual Australia Day awards.

By Wellington Shire Council - 27th January 2004 - Back to News

Stratford resident Ben Davies has been named Citizen of the Year, with Michael Bruns of Woodside and Anna Melville from Maffra jointly named Young Citizen of the Year. The Community Event of the Year has been won by Stratford Victoria Sister Cities Inc for the Stratfords of the World Reunion, while the Central Gippsland Branch of the RSPCA has been named Community Group of the Year.

Given the very high calibre of submissions the judging panel of Shire Councillors also decided on two additional honours. The Specialised Event of the Year goes to the Heyfield & District Vintage Machinery Group for the 9th National Historical Machinery Association Rally held in Heyfield, while 83 year old Vern Scott has received the Wellington Special Award for Exceptional Service to the Heyfield Community.

Citizen of the Year Ben Davies has made a significant contribution to the Stratford community since moving there in the early 1970’s. A leading figure in the Stratford Lions Club, he has held the post of President twice, is now serving a third term as Secretary, and has been Zone Chairman of the Lions District. He has been involved in the running of the Sunday craft market at the Knob Reserve, the building of an amenities block at the Nuntin Cemetary, and the setting up of the Stratford & District Neighbourhood Watch program. President of the Safety House Committee for several years, he is also a supporter of the proposed Transaction/Neighbourhood House centre. In addition he is President of the Stratford Hall Committee.

Ben is an active supporter of many varied social welfare projects and fundraising efforts, both locally and on a wider scale. He has been involved with the Maffra Football Club and with the Parent Committee for the Stratford Junior Football Club. He is a member of the District Advisory Network, and for the last five years has worked directly with Wellington Shire Council on this project. Ben is also a much valued bus driver for the local community.

Eighteen year old Anna Melville from Maffra, joint winner of the Young Citizen of the Year award, suffers from peripheral neuropathy, for which she requires monthly infusions of a blood product. This has made her aware of the need for blood donations and inspired her to encourage fellow pupils and teachers at Gippsland Grammar School to donate blood, and to promote the establishment of a blood donation centre in the local area. A centre opened in 2002 and the pupils have a permanent booking each week, organised by Anna, to give blood.

In addition, for the last three years she has organised a Christmas concert with student musicians from various schools performing together to raise money for the Anglicare Gipps Kids Appeal. She won a Rotary Victorian Youth "Shine on" Award in 2002, was the ABC Gippsland "Heywire" winner for 2003, and also received the Sale RSL Citizenship Award Shield that same year.

Anna also wrote a choral work that was performed in the "Tripping the Light" show, as part of the opening festival for the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre.

She has been offered a place at university to study Music, with a view to becoming a Music Therapist.

Fellow Young Citizen of the Year Michael Bruns is also aged 18 and has demonstrated a tremendous commitment to the local community through his involvement with the Yarram & District First Aid Team, the Woodside Surf Lifesaving Club and the Yarram & district Pony Club.

His honours include: Yarram Lions Club Youth of The Year; Yarram Zone Public Speaker Youth of the Year; Woodside Surf Lifesaving President’s Award; Woodside Lifesaving 100 hours Award; and Yarram Secondary College House Captain.

Last March’s very successful Stratfords of the World Reunion was chosen as Community Event of the Year because of the way in which it brought the local community even closer together as they worked on the initiative, and also because of the strong bonds developed with other Stratford communities around the world which attended the event. Instrumental to its success was the preparation work done by the Committee of Stratford Victoria Sister Cities Inc.

As Community Group of the Year winners, the Central Gippsland Branch of the RSPCA has raised over $180,000 over the past four years to purchase land and build a new animal shelter in Wurruk. The shelter provides humane care for unwanted cats and dogs in the Gippsland region and was made possible thanks to the tremendous commitment of volunteers who were involved in the fundraising and construction work.

Scooping the Specialised Event of the Year, 2003’s National Historical Machinery Association Rally in Heyfield was the largest such rally of its kind ever to be staged in Australia, thanks in no small part to the Heyfield & District Vintage Machinery Group.

Thousands of people attended the event - including hundreds from the UK, Europe, New Zealand and the USA - to view the spectacle of nearly 1,500 exhibits ranging from steam engines and vintage tractors, to trucks, stationary engines and collectibles.

Finally, 83 year Vern Scott won the Wellington Special Award for Exceptional Service to the Heyfield Community, for his very dedicated commitment to the Heyfield RSL, Heyfield Primary School, Heyfield Primary School, the town’s Memorial Hall Committee and North Gippsland Legacy.

He has been instrumental in raising an average of $15,000 a year, which has been donated to various organisations in the town.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "Our congratulations go to all the winners. They have done this Shire proud.

"Once again we had to consider a very strong field of candidates and deciding which individuals and groups would get an award was difficult.

"It’s also important at this time to acknowledge all those other truly outstanding people and groups that we have in Wellington who are also doing great things for their local communities and the Shire."
