Enjoy Christmas lights but take care, says Council

Latrobe City has issued a warning to those driving around towns to view the Christmas lights to take extra care on the roads.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 13th December 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s Manager Community Safety, Henk Harberts, said that whilst viewing Christmas lights was a popular evening activity, it was still necessary to exercise great care and attention whilst driving.

"The festive light displays attract many families in the evenings leading up to Christmas, both on foot and in cars. Those driving cars need to stay alert to the increased numbers of pedestrians, especially children. Those on foot need to ensure that it is safe to cross the road," Mr Harberts warned.

Mr Harberts added that parking was also a concern at Christmas light display ‘hotspots’.

"Visitors must bear in mind that these houses are often in residential areas and many homeowners in these areas may still be carrying out their everyday business. Visitors should not double-park, park across driveways, or park too close to other vehicles.

"Drivers should also use clear indication when they are pulling in to view lights. Stopping suddenly or turning into a parking space with no warning is dangerous to other road users, both those in other cars and those on foot," Mr Harberts said.

"The main thing to remember is to be patient and cautious when viewing the lights. Traffic congestion is probable during the evening viewing. If at all possible, park the car away from the lights and walk to the houses to view them. That way, drivers can enjoy the Christmas lights as much as the rest of the family.

"Drivers should also remember that children on the streets, excited by the displays, may not remember their usual road safety drill, during this colourful time of the year," Mr Harberts said.

"We want people to enjoy the lights as there are some great displays in all towns, but just remember to err on the side of caution and drive slowly, giving clear signals and being aware of other road users at all times," Mr Harberts concluded.
