Community Celebrates Bridge Opening

Community Groups and volunteers deserve a big round of applause after the Swing Bridge opening and handover according to the Mayor of Wellington Shire Council, Cr Malcolm Hole.

By Wellington Shire Council - 21st February 2006 - Back to News

"The opening and hand over is a great credit to the community who have put in their time and a lot of hard work for this event.

"Wellington Shire Council is very appreciative of their efforts," he said.

Members of various community groups acted as parking attendants, crowd marshals and also provided catering.

The processions on both land and water were also largely organised by the community.

"It was obvious that the owners of the vintage vehicles and hot rods had put a lot of work into their restoration. We are very grateful that they wanted to be involved in this event," he said.

Boats from Sale and as far as Paynesville participated in the spectacle.

"The bridge opening is a great example of Wellington residents not only working together, but coming together to celebrate a significant occasion. We offer a heartfelt thankyou to all those involved, and to all those who attended".

"It was a wonderful day and I am now looking forward to our next community event," said Cr Hole.

The opening signifies the end of restoration works on the bridge.

"We thank VicRoads for the terrific organisation of the busses and the opening, not to mention the enormous effort that they have put in to restoring the Swing Bridge," said Cr Hole.

Ownership of the bridge has now passed from VicRoads to the Wellington Shire Council.
