Public Meeting to discuss planning guidelines for Port Albert

Wellington Shire Council is inviting the Port Albert community to attend a public meeting on Tuesday 7 June to discuss planning proposals aimed at helping to ensure future development in this historic township reflects and enhances its character.

The 7pm meeting is being held at the Mechanics Hall and will feature a presentation by consultants Coomes Consulting Group - commissioned by the council to prepare proposed planning scheme amendments and guidelines that will encourage the type of sympathetic development promoted in the Port Albert Master Plan and Business Opportunities Study. There will be the opportunity for discussion around Coomes’ recommendations, which are aimed at ensuring development:

  • complements the natural and cultural character of the area;
  • complements the maritime heritage focus of Port Albert;
  • meets the existing and future needs of the local community; and
  • continues to encourage tourism and investment in tourism.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "Construction of the $980,000 Stockyard Point redevelopment is set to make the historic Port Albert township even more of a drawcard for tourists and those looking to relocate to the area for a sea-change. It’s therefore important that we do as much as possible to ensure any new development in the future is consistent with the needs of the local community and in keeping with the township’s character.

"We would encourage as many local people as possible to attend the 7 June meeting to discuss the consultants’ recommendations. This will greatly assist us in deciding the best way to progress, when we look to make a formal amendment to the Wellington Planning Scheme later in the year."
