Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2022 to draw estimated $42M tourism boost for Bass Coast Shire

Bass Coast Shire Council celebrates a multi-million boost to local tourism as the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2022 wraps a phenomenal, record-breaking weekend.

The biggest crowd in 10 years joined us on Phillip Island for the Australian MotoGP from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 October. Over 91,000 attendees returned to the race over the weekend, the first held since 2019, which is the biggest crowd recorded since 2012. The estimated economic benefit from MotoGP to Bass Coast is $42 million. Businesses shire-wide warmly welcomed visitors for weeks before and after the event, enjoying a positive impact to commerce across the Coast.

Significant boost to economy

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan, said, "The Australian MotoGP is incredibly important for our local businesses as it provides an important boost to our economy outside of school holidays and the peak summer period. Our spectacular coastline and natural environment, as well as plenty of off-track activities, were also broadcast around the world to remind visitors how special our region is."

"I would like to congratulate the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and other partnering organisations that contribute to making it such a fantastic event. Thank you to our community for once again welcoming fans from all over the world back to Phillip Island." Cr Whelan said.

Biggest crowd in decade

Cr Whelan said, "To have the biggest crowd in a decade is testament to how much fans and riders love the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, we just love hearing time and time again how Phillip Island is their favourite track. It was so good to see everyone out enjoying themselves."

"Council is proud to host the Cowes entertainment across the weekend in partnership with several local businesses. Cowes really came to life on Saturday night with over 3,000 people enjoying the free concert on the foreshore. Safe travels to all our visitors. We look forward to welcoming you back next year." Cr Whelan concluded.
