Impressive streetscape improvements to Sale entry point get under way

Wellington Shire Council has commenced work on impressive streetscape enhancements to Foster Street at the western entry to Sale, under a Victorian Government-funded initiative designed to help boost the town’s and shire’s economy.

The Government has provided a Pride of Place grant worth $100,000 for a program of improvement work, with the council also contributing $100,000.

The overall aim is to create a suitably impressive and appealing gateway to the city, the multi-million-dollar Port of Sale redevelopment and the adjoining, highly successful Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre. This in turn will help attract further investment and business activity in the city and more widely around the shire.

The first stage of the streetscape enhancements to Sale, carried out this week, has involved replacing 24 Melaleuca and Brush Box trees along the north side of Foster Street, between Reeve Street and Raymond Street, with 27 prettier White Cedars (also known as Melia Azedarachs). One of the few Australian native trees that is deciduous, this species is renowned for its lush, glossy green foliage that turns bright yellow in autumn. Its fragrant, lilac flowers are followed by yellow fruit in winter.

Further improvements to be carried out over the coming months along this stretch of Foster Street include:

  • installing suitably symbolic works of sculpture to act as landmarks for the city;
  • planting alternate bands of low level plants and lawn along the median strip;
  • significant paving improvements between Reeve Street and Raymond Street, with a particular focus outside the front of the Courthouse;
  • modifying the kerb at the corner of Raymond Street and Foster Street to make it more user-friendly for pedestrians to cross.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "This is a very important program of improvements intended to greatly enhance the entry to Sale, to develop a greater sense of local pride and establish the Port of Sale precinct as a clear focal point for the city. The potential economic benefits of all this for the city and the shire economy are quite substantial."
