Written permits required before burning off

Latrobe City Council and the CFA have reminded residents that written permits are required before burning off, following concerns that some residents in Latrobe City are not adhering to requirements during the fire danger period.

By Latrobe City Council - 21st January 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s Municipal Fire Prevention Officer (MFPO), Lance King, said that local CFA brigades had attended a number of illegal fires over the past week, raising fire awareness issues throughout the municipality.

"Fire restrictions were implemented in early December. That means that no person may light a fire in the open air for burning off grass, scrub, stubble or rubbish without a written permit," Mr King explained.

"Permits are not currently being issued because of the existing high fire risk, however, conditions are reviewed on an ongoing basis," Mr King said.

"With the prolific grass growth this season followed by dry conditions, residents need to be ever vigilant to protect their properties from the threat of fire. This means that burning off within the current climate is adding to the risk of fires getting out of control," Mr King explained.

"With a weekend similar to last, with rain and cooler temperatures, residents may forget about fire restrictions. However, it is now the height of summer and it doesn’t take many hot days to dry the ground out. It is imperative that those wishing to burn off seek permission through the proper authorities," Mr King warned.

Mr King added that in order to reduce the fire risk on a property, it is recommended that any grass, scrub or rubbish be removed to any of the City’s transfer stations.

Written permits are only available from the MFPO at Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700.

Further information on fires during the fire danger period can be obtained from the CFA’s ‘Can I or Can't I?’ pamphlet. Contact your local Fire Brigade or Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700.
