Testing of sewers for stormwater infiltration targets Eastwood

By East Gippsland Water - 17th March 2011 - Back to News

East Gippsland Water will shortly commence checks on 14 km of sewer pipeline in the Eastwood area of Bairnsdale, to test for stormwater infiltration of the network caused by leaks and illegal stormwater pipe connections.

The checks are due to be carried out between Tuesday 22 March and Friday 1 April. They will focus on a section of the Eastwood Estate – in particular Flinns Rd, Timbarra Dve, Wilpena Crt, Knight Crt, Eastern View Dve, Morton Dve, The Grange, The Backwater, Mistana Crt, Gatehouse Dve, Selwyn Crt, Kooralbyn Crt, Glendon Dve and Birch Crt.

Stormwater and sewer systems need to be kept completely separate to ensure that each operates efficiently. If stormwater enters the sewer network, it mixes with the sewage flowing to nearby wastewater treatment plants and also needs to be treated. This intensifies pressure on pump stations, as well as impacting on the operating costs for the plants and the volume of greenhouse gases generated. It may also increase the likelihood of pipe blockages and sewage spills during heavy rain events, with stormwater entering sewers in greater volumes than the sewer mains are designed to cater for.

The checks involve injecting small amounts of non-hazardous white smoke between one sealed sewer manhole connection and another. Where it eventually comes out indicates whether the section is operating properly, or whether there are leaks or illegal connections that need to be tackled. Smoke escaping from stormwater connections, such as stormwater pipes and gutter downpipes, highlights a problem.

Letters advising of the work are being sent in advance to all households affected. In instances where illegal stormwater connections may be identified, the homeowners concerned will be contacted and directed to a registered plumber to have the necessary remedial work carried out as soon as possible.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "Smoke testing is part of an ongoing program of works to make sure that our sewer network operates efficiently and that the stormwater system works as it should do. We will be endeavouring to ensure that any inconvenience caused by the work is kept to a minimum and would like to thank customers in advance for their cooperation."
