Latrobe City Council formally resolved on Monday evening to acknowledge the enormous efforts of all agencies, their staff and volunteers involved with the recent fire emergency.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Lisa Price, said that during the five days of the crisis many agencies, their staff and volunteers, as well as Latrobe City staff, worked tirelessly to protect life and property.

"During this devastating time, we have once again witnessed the overwhelming generosity, courage, determination and tenacity of the Gippsland community.

"From the CFA crews out in the thick of the action, to the volunteers helping at the relief centre in Churchill, Latrobe City Council would like to extend its gratitude for their support. Without the cooperation and commitment of all organisations, state government, local government and the community an event such as this would result in even greater devastation.

"My particular thanks to those CFA crews who travelled to assist our communities.

It must be said that there is a remarkable camaraderie amongst CFA volunteers. It is a remarkable sight watching them stand shoulder to shoulder, fighting a blaze which would make most mere mortals whimper and cry. For their incredible bravery, strength and stubborn determination – I thank them sincerely.

"Whilst the threat from this devastating fire event appears to be contained, there is still an enormous amount of work to be done in terms of recovery.

"Many agencies and volunteers will have an ongoing role to play in supporting our communities through this difficult time, the recovery process will be significant," Cr Price said.

"And we will not be alone in our recovery of this I am absolutely certain. Many members of our community, our state and federal politicians, my fellow Mayors and councillors from other municipalities – all have been in contact to offer their support, their well wishes and most touchingly of all, their heartfelt sympathy for the losses experienced by this community.

"Of course our thoughts are with those members of the community who have lost homes, buildings, precious personal possessions, cars or stock. The sense of loss and grief which must come from having experienced the loss of these possessions must be truly devastating.

"A recovery centre has been set up at Boolarra to facilitate the needs of the community in the short and longer term," Cr Price said.

An information line has been established for those requiring assistance following the fires: 1800 01 77 77.
