Council Officers And Police Herd Cattle From Bass Highway During The Night

Bass Coast Shire Council Local Laws staff and members of Victoria Police were called out at 4am last week to round up cattle along the Bass Highway.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 29th August 2005 - Back to News

Council’s Local Laws Team Leader, Kaye Hall said that it took three Local Laws staff and two Police officers to round up the cattle near Anderson.

"About 15 steers had escaped through a damaged fence and unfortunately two of them were killed after being hit by a semi trailer.

"We did manage to get the others secured away before there were any more accidents.

While the damaged truck had to be towed away later that morning Ms Hall was thankful that no one was injured.

"The damage to the truck and cattle was unfortunate, but I was glad that it was not a car or motor bike involved as the driver may not have been so lucky," Ms Hall said.

The incident offered a stark reminder as to the importance of having well maintained fences.
