Council presses Sale Gaol owners for appropriate redevelopment of site

Wellington Shire Council is pressing the owners of the former Sale Gaol to ensure that any proposed redevelopment of the site is appropriate to its high profile location at the gateway to the Port of Sale.

By Wellington Shire Council - 7th August 2003 - Back to News

The gaol, on the corner of Foster Street and Reeve Street, was originally built in the 1880s. While the outer walls remain, most of the early buildings have long since disappeared, with their replacements dating from the 1960s onwards and not considered of heritage value. The gaol itself closed in 1997 and is rapidly falling into a state of decay.

The owners have submitted a planning application to have all the buildings removed, along with sections of the outer walls. However they are looking to retain the more significant parts of the walls for posterity, including the section containing the main entrance gate.

The gaol borders an area of Sale of particular importance to tourism, being in a prominent position at the gateway to the Port of Sale, which is itself set for a multi-million dollar makeover and redevelopment to transform it into a stunning new focal point for the city. Taking this into account, the Council’s General Purposes Committee has passed a resolution urging the owners to liaise with the Shire to ensure that any proposal for the gaol is in keeping with its surroundings.

The future of the site will be discussed again at the next Council Meeting on 19 August.

Removal of the gaol’s buildings and walls, if it proceeds, along with any redevelopment of the site, would be subject to building permits being granted by the Shire.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "This gaol has been a major Sale landmark for over a hundred years. It now looks rundown and sad and something needs to be done to the site given its prominent location at the entrance to the city. We will monitor progress closely as we press the owners to ensure that any redevelopment is appropriate to its surroundings."
