Biological Control Of Bridal Creeper

Students from the Forestech campus of East Gippsland Institute of TAFE in conjunction with East Gippsland Shire Council recently undertook biological control of Bridal Creeper in the Gippsland Lakes region by releasing rust fungus.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 30th July 2004 - Back to News

Bridal Creeper is one of twenty ‘weeds of national significance’ declared by the Commonwealth Government threatening native vegetation communities in many parts of the country, including East Gippsland. Conventional herbicide application control is difficult to achieve on Bridal Creeper due to the creeping form of the plant. Physical removal is also difficult due to the large root mass of the plant.

The biological control method of releasing rust fungus undertaken by the Forestech students as part of their Certificate 3 in Conservation and Land Management will assist the management of Bridal Creeper in the region. Ian Bate, Environmental Officer with East Gippsland Shire Council said ‘ It is essential that the rust is distributed throughout the region to help control Bridal Creeper and the efforts by the Forestech Students will go a long way to helping achieve this’.

The Forestech students will continue to monitor the initial effectiveness of the rust fungus at the release sites. Data generated from the rust release sites will be sent to the Keith Turnbull Research Institute in Frankston.

Continued efforts to manage Bridal Creeper will be undertaken by East Gippsland Shire Council and the Department of Sustainability and Environment later this year.
