Danny O'Brien calls for urgent action to save Yanakie weather station critical to South Gippsland emergency response
The Nationals are urging state and federal governments to save Yanakie AWS, vital for South Gippsland's emergency responses, local weather data, fire modelling, and coastal safety. Closure risks major forecasting gaps.
The Nationals' have expressed concerns over the impending closure of the Yanakie Automatic Weather Station (AWS) and requested the state and federal government to ensure it remains. Speaking in state parliament, Melina Bath called on the Minister for Emergency Services to work with the Federal Government and Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) to intervene and push for the reestablishment of the Yanakie AWS beyond 1 July 2025.

Protect weather coverage
Ms Bath said, "Continuous, localised weather data must remain available for storm, fire, flood, and safety responses in this area of South Gippsland. Removal of the station will create a weather forecasting gap stretching from Yarram to Pound Creek which encompasses some of Victoria's most treacherous coastline. The decision to decommission must be overturned - the station provides real time data to emergency services, commercial and recreational fishers, farmers, and tourists."
The Yanakie AWS is accessed up to 16,000 times a week by Willy Weather. It delivers timely and accurate weather forecasts, used in emergencies by the Coast Guard and CFA. Leader of The Nationals and Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien said residents and tourists relied on the accurate localised storm warnings, wind predictions and rainfall data broadcast from Yanakie AWS.
Save Yanakie station
Mr O'Brien said, "The station assists with fire behaviour modelling and informs planned burn operations - its loss will make it harder for agencies to protect community safety. I have written to the Federal Minister for Environment underlining the critical importance of Yanakie AWS and have sought a commitment for its ongoing funding and maintenance," he said.
Ms Bath said the BoM's ill-conceived decision was made without consultation and there is compelling evidence for the Allan Government to intervene and seek a decision reversal from the federal government. "For the safety of locals and visitors, both the state and federal government must recognise the importance of the Yanakie AWS and ensure it remains operational."
