Gippsland Water Aplies To Vary Its Bulk Water Entitlement

Gippsland Water is preparing an application to the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) for a variation to its Bulk Water Entitlement from Merriman’s Creek.

By Gippsland Water - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

The application to DSE follows investigations into the provision of sewerage services to the township of Seaspray and Honeysuckles identified as a priority as part of the Victorian Government’s Country Towns Water supply and Sewerage Program.

Gippsland Water currently receives water from Merriman’s Creek to service the township of Seaspray. Chief Executive Officer John Mitchell said "In recent years, water use from Seaspray has been as high as 90% of the existing bulk entitlement from the creek".

"In order to provide a sewerage service to address the public health and environmental issues in this area it is necessary to vary the current entitlement to allow an extra 72 million litres of water per year to be acquired from the creek." Mr Mitchell said.

Gippsland Water has considered potential options to secure the extra water needed. The option to secure additional water from Merriman’s Creek is considered as the only suitable option available and therefore Gippsland Water is seeking to vary its bulk water entitlement.

Gippsland Water identified that sufficient water exists within Merriman’s Creek to meet this requirement without impacting environmental flows.

As part of the provision of services to Seaspray and Honeysuckles, Gippsland Water also intends to focus on maximising water efficiency within the townships. A targeted Water Conservation Strategy is being developed by Gippsland Water who will work with its customers to minimise water use.

Gippsland Water welcomes comments on the application and asks that customers provide them in writing to Gippsland Water or by email. Comments on the proposal must be submitted no later the 5:00 pm Friday 1st September 2006.
