Council plans for Wonthaggi growth
Bass Coast Shire Council is undertaking long term planning for Wonthaggi and surrounds, with plans to guide development and support growth for the next 50 years.
Council, in collaboration with the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA), has prepared the Wonthaggi North East Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) to guide development in the area.Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, said with Wonthaggi identified as a regional growth centre in Plan Melbourne 2017-2050, preparing for the future was essential.
"The Wonthaggi North East Precinct Structure Plan provides a framework to support the long term growth of Wonthaggi and consolidate its role as a regional centre," Cr Rothfield said.
"The Plan will provide for approximately 4,000 residential lots, along with 72 hectares of land to facilitate employment opportunities.
"It will also plan for the expansion of infrastructure to service the increased population."
The PSP includes:
The PSP was endorsed by Council at the June Ordinary Meeting, and will now inform the preparation of a Development Contributions Plan for the area. The project will allow for further landowner and community input as it progresses.
Council has also adopted a reviewed Wonthaggi/Dalyston Structure Plan, which sets broad directions for urban development in the two towns.
Cr Rothfield said the existing Structure Plan was adopted by Council in 2008, and it was time to review and update the Plan to respond to how the two towns have evolved over the past decade.
"Since 2008, the opportunities for Wonthaggi as a regional growth centre, as identified by the State Government in Plan Melbourne, have changed, and this needs to be reflected in revised Plans," Cr Rothfield said.
"This review has been guided by feedback from a group of community representatives who participated in the Future Wonthaggi Focus Groups Workshops in 2016."
Council will now commence the preparation of individual Structure Plans for Wonthaggi and Dalyston.
