New Online Service For Gippsland

Technology that will allow residents to ask questions and raise concerns from home

By Emma Kae - 9th July 2002 - Back to News

In a new project of its kind for Gippsland, the Wellington Shire Council is now conducting council meetings for hundreds of residents in the comfort of their own homes simultaneously using the Internet.

The live web cast, which encourages the concept of open Government, enables interested persons to log onto the internet and view the Council’s decision making process during council meetings. This technology produced is aimed at keeping the community full involved and informed about developments occurring in the Wellington region.

In addition to the live web cast, interactive chat room sessions will follow each meeting and allow residents to ask questions and raise concerns about the issues that are affecting them. Concerned citizens can now address Council members directly and know that their requests and ideas are being heard by the people with the power to really make things happen.

The next Council meeting is scheduled to take place on July 16 from 6:00pm at the Yarram Customer Service Centre. All are welcome to attend in person or watch the screening live via the Wellington Shire website.

The Gippsland Portal is waiting to hear if other Shires will be adapting this technology into their public meetings and forums.
