Community Turns Out To Celebrate Memorial Park

A large crowd turned out on Sunday, 11 October, for the official opening of the Grantville & District Memorial Park.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 16th October 2009 - Back to News

The opening celebrations included performances from local school children, the Young Spirits Dancers and the Waterline singers, with Johan Scheffer MP unveiling the plaque to declare the park officially open.

Construction of the park totalled $445,000. The project was funded by Bass Coast Shire Council, extensive community fundraising and a $141,590 grant from the State Government Community Support program.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr John Duscher, said the Grantville community had created a wonderful outdoor space, which set a benchmark for communities across Bass Coast.

"The committee has worked tirelessly to prepare this space and they should be congratulated for an outstanding result," said Cr Duscher.

"The contribution of the local community, including their fundraising efforts, has been incredible, and is a fine example of strong local partnerships.

"This park is a wonderful asset and I am sure the communities of Grantville and surrounding districts will enjoy it for many, many years. It will encourage regular use and this hub will build and strengthen the spirit that is gaining momentum in this area," Cr Duscher continued.

"The unique interpretive storyboards reflect the rich local history, culture and achievements."

Cr Duscher also acknowledged the work of Cr Veronica Dowman on the project.

"Cr Dowman is a passionate advocate for community projects in her ward and the Memorial Park is no exception," said Cr Duscher.

"From the earliest stages of applying for State Government funding, through the fundraising and actual construction of the park, Cr Dowman’s drive and commitment to this project has never waivered."

Cr Dowman said the hard work, determination and generosity of the local community had turned the dream into a reality.

"Our community has turned a bare tract of land into a regionally significant, sustainable community park," Cr Dowman said.

"We now have a unique memorial commemorating our service men and women, as well as an amphitheatre and playground facilities.

"Visitors to the park will be able to explore the history of the area through the interpretative signs on the walkways, and the sculpture at the front of the park, by Victoria Nelson, celebrates our past history and looks to the future."

Cr Dowman expressed her thanks to the Park’s Committee of Management - Bob Hannah, Anwyn Martin, Jenny Churchill, Ron Kelly, Ray Williams, Don Wheatley, Ray Wallis, Jock McKechnie, Jack Smith and Neil Taylor.

"The committee showed incredible persistence and determination to ensure this park became a reality," commended Cr Dowman.
