Meetings Provide Way Forward on Hotel

Meetings this week between Wellington Shire Council and Heritage Victoria are likely to provide an outcome that both protects public safety and restores the historic verandah on the Criterion Hotel in Sale.

By Wellington Shire Council - 24th July 2006 - Back to News

The urgent meetings were arranged by the Council because of serious concerns with public safety due to the dilapidated condition of the hotel verandah. Public access on the footpath under the verandah has been restricted for a number of weeks.

"This is a very positive outcome for the Council, Heritage Victoria and the Sale community," said Mr Lyndon Webb, Chief Executive Officer of Wellington Shire Council.

"At the meetings both parties were able to suggest an emergency building program that will make the verandah safe for the public in the short term while allowing for full renovation of the structure in the medium term.

"Heritage Victoria indicated that they support enforcement measures proposed by Council on the owners to ensure that the renovation of the verandah happens quickly.

"Council is very pleased with this outcome," said Mr Webb.

"Within in days we look like having an agreed process that will see the historic verandah made safe and fully restored regardless of who owns the hotel."

Mr Webb said Heritage Victoria intends to confirm the details of the arrangement by early next week.

"We will then take immediate action to ensure work is started," said Mr Webb.
