Government Wind Farm Information Wrong: Hall

Gippsland MP Peter Hall is keeping the pressure on over wind farm planning in South Gippsland, and will call on the Parliament to condemn the Government for its refusal to acknowledge the effect of windfarms on local communities.

In a Notice of Motion registered today (Wednesday 15 September) Mr Hall is also seeking to have the State Government recognise the minimal contribution windfarms make towards meeting Victoria’s power needs.

He has put the notice following what he believes was an unsatisfactory response by Energy Minister, Theo Theophanous, to a question without notice yesterday (Tuesday 14 September).

Outside Parliament, Mr Hall said: "The Government persists in putting about this furphy that windfarms are efficient producers of energy.

"The fact is that by the Government’s own admission, wind farms generate only around 30 per cent of their nominated capacity. That means that the 104 megawatt wind farm at Bald Hills actually produces only 31 megawatts of electricity, yet the Government keeps referring to a ‘104 megawatt wind farm’ which is, at the very least, misleading."

In his question to the Energy Minister in Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Hall asked: "According to the government's own wind farm guidelines, wind turbines operate at 30 per cent capacity, so I ask the minister: is it not a fact that Bald Hills will generate only 31 megawatts of electricity and not 104 megawatts as was falsely claimed by the Premier?"

In his response, the Minister admitted that the average quoted by Mr Hall was an average of some wind farms, and claimed that on some wind farms the average was "up to 40 per cent."

Speaking today, Mr Hall said: "This clearly shows that to suggest the Bald Hills wind farm will produce 104 megawatts of power is plain wrong.

"It also means that the 48 turbine wind farm at Dollar, a supposed 79 megawatt capacity facility, will in reality generate only 24 megawatts of power. In this case, the decision on whether it goes ahead or not should rest with the South Gippsland Shire Council, because the Government’s own guidelines say that anything under 30 megawatts can be decided by the local council."

Mr Hall asked Mr Theophanous in Parliament on Tuesday whether, given that the proposed Dollar wind farm would only generate 24 megawatts, the minister would ensure that the South Gippsland Shire Council was the sole planning authority for the proposed wind farm.

However, the Minister would not give a conclusive answer.
