Yarram airport in East Gippsland gets $300,000 federal funding to improve safety
Yarram Airport will be upgraded thanks to a $300,000 funding boost under Round 2 of the Federal Government's Regional Airports Program.
Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the project would involve the installation of security and animal proof fencing to make the airport safer. "Our small airstrips across Gippsland are valuable assets for our communities, particularly those in more remote locations."

Upgrades on regional airports
Mr Chester said, "This additional funding will help to boost safety at the Yarram Airport and deter animals from entering the runway. This investment will also bring a welcome injection of government money into areas of Gippsland that have felt the impact of drought, bushfires and the coronavirus."
Mr Chester said the program supported important safety and access upgrades for regional airports. "For our regional communities, the local airport provides an essential link to the rest of Australia. The Regional Airport's Program is part of the Federal Government's commitment to improve the accessibility and safety of the regional airports and aerodromes across the nation."
"We are investing $100 million over four years from 2019 - 20 to 2022 - 23 to help owners of regional airports right across Australia deliver upgrades to improve runway and taxiway pavements, install new lighting or fencing."
Improving safety on aircrafts
Mr Chester said, "These projects will improve the safety of aircraft, operators and passengers, the delivery of goods and services and better meet the operational requirements of aeromedical and other emergency services, including supporting bushfire preparedness."
Yarram Airport has received Federal Government funding in the past to build a new helipad, install fencing and purchase a generator. For more information on the Regional Airports Program, visit the regional aviation infrastructure program.
