A community picnic to celebrate International Day of People with Disability will be held on Sunday 2 December, at Guide Park in Wonthaggi.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 26th November 2007 - Back to News

Organised by Bass Coast Shire Council, the picnic will run from 11am until 3pm.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, believes International Day of People with Disability is an important day.

"It’s a day to raise awareness of disability, and to acknowledge that people with disability play a vital part in the community," said Cr Goodwin.

"This picnic is a great way for the community to come together and learn more about disability issues.

"It is also a chance to find out about the talents and achievements of people with disability in our community."

Guide Park, on South Dudley Road in Wonthaggi, was chosen as the location for the picnic, as it is suitable for people of all abilities and all ages.

"Guide Park has accessible facilities including paths, tables, playground and toilets," explained Cr Goodwin.

"There is also off street parking, shady trees, a sheltered area and BBQs."

"We invite all the community to bring along a picnic lunch and join in on this great day," said Cr Goodwin.

Council has worked closely with a number of local groups to organise the event.

"There will be live music, displays and information from a range of organisations that provide services by or for people with disability," said Cr Goodwin.

"GippSport is organising accessible activities and Safeway in Wonthaggi have provided bottled water and some snacks for showbags."

Cr Goodwin said there will also be an award ceremony, organised by WHO (We Help Ourselves), a local advocacy group.

"These awards recognise employers and employees of businesses in Bass Coast who show exceptional understanding in their approach to people with disabilities," explained Cr Goodwin.

"It’s an honour to be asked to present these awards."

International Day of People with Disability was established in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly to promote awareness of the contributions and experiences of people with disability. It is celebrated worldwide on 3 December each year; however celebrations in Wonthaggi will be on 2 December, to enable more people to attend.

With one in five Australians experiencing some degree of disability, it is vital their achievements and contributions are promoted and acknowledged.
