‘Positioning Latrobe City for a Low Carbon Emissions Future’ and to ensure that the policy remains proactive.

Latrobe City’s general manager economic sustainability, Allison Jones, said that the adopted terms of reference provide for representatives and observers from local firms both large and small, government departments, unions and other relevant committees.

"In terms of industry representation, Council will advertise the vacancies and seek expressions of interest. Council will then make the final decision on the make-up of the committee. Council will also write to a number of Australian and Victorian Government Department heads seeking senior representatives to observe the activities of this Committee.

"The Committee will oversee the delivery of 30 key actions that Council’s policy highlighted, many of which have already commenced implementation. The policy provides the framework to systematically overcome the challenges and maximise the opportunities that may be presented by a carbon constrained economy. This is the first policy of its kind to be developed by any Council in Australia and places Latrobe City and the Gippsland region in a position to lead the transformation at both a local community and regional level," Ms Jones explained.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that it was now timely to establish the committee.

"Now is the time for Council to establish this high level advisory committee to help us drive the transformation towards a low carbon emissions economy. This committee will play a strong role in advocating on behalf of the community and could be a one-stop-shop for both the Victorian and Australian Governments. It is important to attract high quality candidates for the committee to ensure we have a strong leadership into the future," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.

Latrobe City Council is seeking Expressions of Interest up until 15 December 2010. Terms of reference, Expressions of Interest forms, and further information can all be obtained from Council’s website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au
