Bass Coast Welcomes Growing Regions Plan

Bass Coast Shire Council has welcomed the Australian Government’s new ‘Growing Regions Plan’.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 21st September 2007 - Back to News

The $200 million plan was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Mark Vaile, last week.

"Bass Coast and other coastal communities have experienced unprecedented growth over the last 10 years," said Bass Coast Mayor and National Sea Change Taskforce Treasurer, Cr Neville Goodwin.

"We have huge demands for upgraded and new infrastructure, like sport, recreation, cultural, and other community facilities."

Cr Goodwin said he and the National Sea Change Taskforce had discussed the challenges facing Bass Coast, and other coastal towns, with Mr Vaile and his staff over the last 12 months.

"We have been long seeking recognition of the issues that growing coastal communities face, and funding to address these issues. The announcement by Mr Vaile is very appreciated.

"Mr Vaile has also indicated there will be further announcements in the near future to help communities like Bass Coast."

Census figures show the population of coastal communities around Australia has increased from 4.9 million in 1996, to 5.9 million in 2006.

The statistics show that Australia’s coastal population is growing at a rate 60 percent higher than the national average. The coastal population is expected to experience another major surge at the end of the decade, when the baby boomers generation starts to reach retirement age.

"This is a huge redistribution of Australia’s population," continued Cr Goodwin. "And the move to coastal areas, including Bass Coast, is expected to continue for the next 20 years."

Cr Neville Goodwin was recently re-elected as Treasurer of the National Sea Change Taskforce for the second year in a row. He is one of two Victorian representatives on the Taskforce Executive.
