Northe Slams Labor’S Gippsland Water Grab

The Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe has slammed the Brumby Government’s decision to take another 10 billion litres of Gippsland’s water to prop up Melbourne’s water supply.

Mr Northe said Labor’s decision to raid the Thomson River’s environmental water quality reserve was in direct contradiction to its Our Water, Our Future policy.

"Labor promised environmental water would only be taken from the Thomson River if Melbourne moved to stage 4 water restrictions," Mr Northe said.

"In October 2006 Labor announced that 10 billion litres of water was going to be returned to the stressed Thomson River.

"But just 12 months later Water Minister Tim Holding announced that the water was to be reserved to supplement Melbourne’s water supplies.

"Now two years later, a further 10 billion litres of water is being taken, despite the fact that Labor refuses to move Melbourne to Stage 4 water restrictions."

Mr Northe said Labor’s water grab was a direct result of its failure to plan for Melbourne’s water needs.

"The Brumby Government has had 10 years to plan for Melbourne’s water needs," Mr Northe said.

"It has ignored opportunities to harvest stormwater, implement recycling initiatives and substitute recycled water for the potable water used on parks and gardens in Melbourne.

"Each year more than 500 billion litres of water –the city’s entire annual water consumption – flows off Melbourne’s streets into Port Philip Bay.

"Melbourne’s water authorities need to lift their game and live within their means instead of taking the easy option and taking more water from country Victoria."

Mr Northe said he would continue to support local recycling schemes such as the Gippsland Water factory to help free up potable water for Latrobe Valley power generators.

"Gippsland Water will treat and reuse eight million litres of water a day when the Gippsland Water Factory comes online. East Gippsland also treats and reuses all of its waste water, mainly for agricultural and recreational purposes.

"Gippslanders are leading the way on water conservation. It’s time Melbourne did the same," Mr Northe said.
