Open day offers inside look at new corporate headquarters

Latrobe City Council threw open the doors of the new corporate headquarters on Sunday, with the public invited to walk through the new premises on guided tours and encouraged to ask questions about the new administrative staff building.

More than six-hundred people took advantage of the opportunity to join a guided tour of the building.

Entertainment was provided in the new civic square by the Morwell Brass Band, Morwell Caledonian Band, Indigenous dancers and Paddy O’Dowd; initiating the large central entry space as a public square and a new communal gathering and meeting place.

Prior to the official opening of the new building by Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, Indigenous elder, Uncle Albert, explained and then conducted a smoking ceremony that cleansed the building, welcomed its occupants and created a positive aura for its life as an administration centre for the whole community.

At the official building opening, Cr Lougheed said the day was significant in the short history of Latrobe City. "It has been ten years since the Cities of Traralgon, Moe and Morwell, the Shire of Traralgon and parts of the Shires of Rosedale and Narracan amalgamated to form Latrobe City," Cr Lougheed explained.

"Over those ten years, Latrobe City has developed its own unique identity and it is my belief that the opening of these new offices will further develop this identity.

"No longer will our administrative functions be spread throughout the municipality and the efficiencies that will be created from having a central headquarters cannot be underestimated. Already, in the last week or so, I have been able to witness first-hand the increased cooperation between staff and the positive level of staff interaction. This cannot help but assist us to provide our community with superior services.

"This move into the new corporate headquarters provides an environment of new opportunities and possibilities. We are confident that Latrobe City will continue to play a key role in the development of our community," Cr Lougheed said.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said there is no doubting the benefits that staff and residents will gain from having a centralised work base. "The benefits of improved relationships and efficiencies will result in improved performance and customer service for our citizens," Mr Buckley said.

Mr Buckley acknowledged the large number of people, who had contributed to the building of and transition to the corporate headquarters. "Thank you to all those who have ensured that we have not only ended up with a beautiful new office, but also with the project on time and on budget.

"Special thanks also to the Latrobe City project officers, in particular Paul Henderson who has lived and breathed this project for the past year. Paul has done a fantastic job. I would also like to thank our Transition Project Control Group, led by Paul Holton, who have worked hard on ensuring the transition has been seamless to the community.

Presentations were also made during the opening ceremony to a number of schoolchildren who had entered a poster competition entitled ‘Why I love living in Latrobe’. Cr Lougheed said the response to the competition had been fantastic and he was fortunate enough to be one of the judges to select the winners from among the hundreds of entries received. "There is obviously a deep love of our region generated in the hearts of our young people, and their love of where they live comes across in their excellent work," Cr Lougheed said.

A free sausage sizzle was provided to all guests supplied by the Rotary and Lions Clubs of Morwell.
