Youth Community Centres reprieved by young volunteers

Youth Community Centres in Moe and Traralgon will continue to operate, thanks to two young volunteers stepping forward and the backing of Latrobe City Council.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that the Moe and Traralgon Youth Community Centres (formerly known as Youth Action Centres) will operate with the support of two volunteers, Daniel Dickson and Tynele Smythe.

"Latrobe City received initial Commonwealth funding for a pilot project to set up and run Youth Action Centres in the municipality, and while this funding was extended, it is no longer available. Consequently it looked as if the centres would have to close," Mr Buckley explained.

"Daniel and Tynele made a proposal to Council to continue operating the centres on a volunteer basis, and Latrobe City has wholeheartedly embraced the endeavours of these two volunteers. In effect, it means the reprieve of these facilities for young people.

"Council will provide the venue at no cost and will meet some of the program costs, such as materials and insurance coverage," Mr Buckley said.

"Latrobe City would like to thank Daniel and Tynele for giving up their time to assist young people in the municipality. These centres give young people the chance to spend time with friends, get active or just relax in a friendly environment for a few hours a week. Young people in our community will benefit as a result of their generosity," Mr Buckley said.

Latrobe City’s manager community support and development, Steve Tong, said that as in the past, the programs for the centres will include guest speakers from organisations that support local youth, and community volunteers who would like to share their skills with young people.

"Activities will also be offered such as board games, arts and crafts, music, pool, cooking, health information sessions and physical activities," Mr Tong said.

Mr Buckley added that Council will continue to lobby the state and federal governments for funding to continue the Youth Community Centres.

"We would also like to see other community-based organisations get behind the volunteers in their endeavours and offer their support," Mr Buckley concluded.

The Traralgon Youth Community Centre is situated in the Traralgon East Community Hall, Shakespeare Street, and is open on Mondays between 4pm and 7pm. The Moe Youth Community Centre is located in Elizabeth Street, and is open on Tuesdays between 4pm and 7pm.
