Council receives strong response to Wellington Coast Subdivision Strategy

Wellington Shire Council has received a strong response from landowners on a draft Strategy to resolve the issue of inappropriate subdivisions along a section of the Ninety Mile Beach area.

By Wellington Shire Council - 7th February 2005 - Back to News

The draft Strategy was released for public comment and feedback in October 2004 with more than 6,000 affected landowners notified through an introductory letter.

Six information briefings have been held with 681 landowners attending, and over 300 individual landowner enquiries have been answered in writing. As a result, 95 written submissions have been received in response to the Strategy options.

Additional consultation activities are planned for February and March to discuss how the Strategy options may affect particular precincts in the area.

The subdivision issue dates back to the 1950s and 1960s, well before Wellington Shire Council was established, and affects a stretch of the Ninety Mile Beach from Paradise Beach to The Honeysuckles. It also includes the settlements of Seacombe and Hollands Landing.

The draft Wellington Coast Subdivision Strategy has been developed by consultants GHD Pty Ltd and considers how development can proceed in a sensitive manner to protect the area, which is an important recreation, tourism and environmental resource for Victoria.

GHD is managing the community consultation process on behalf of the council with all issues, comments and feedback in relation to the Strategy to be documented in a report to council.

Said Wellington’s Director of Community and Economic Development, Steven Dickson: "There has been a significant response from landowners following the release of the Strategy, with many landowners providing constructive feedback and comment through the public briefings and written submissions.
