Former gun owners in council sights for ammo collection

Current and former firearms owners are being targeted by Council in the ‘Detox Your Home’ collection taking place in Latrobe City on Saturday 20 May.

By Latrobe City Council - 2nd May 2006 - Back to News

The ‘Detox Your Home’ collection taking place between 8am and 11am at the council depot in Driffield Road Morwell, provides householders with an opportunity to dispose of harmful products, safely and cost free.

Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said among the many nasties lurking in garden sheds, cupboards or even gun cabinets, is unwanted ammunition.

"In many cases, householders no longer have firearms on the property. These have been handed in to police or authorised gun dealers during gun amnesties or buybacks; or by a firearms’ owner who has decided not to renew their firearms’ licence. While the firearms themselves have been handed in or sold to a dealer, the bullets or cartridges are sometimes forgotten about at the time," Cr Price said.

"In other situations, ammunition is a number of years old and firearms’ owners have declined to use it in favour of more recent purchases. Whatever the reason for having unwanted ammunition, the ‘Detox Your Home’ collection is the ideal time to dispose of it safely and responsibly.

"Getting rid of this unwanted material appropriately, which can be lethal in the wrong hands, will also provide great peace of mind. A number of parents and grandparents probably worry that at some stage their children or grandchildren may access some old ammunition stored in a cupboard or in the shed, and play with it. This is a great opportunity to remove that terrible possibility once and for all.

Only safety ammunition used for sporting and recreational purposes ie bullets and shotgun cartridges will be accepted for disposal. If there are other explosive products requiring disposal on your property, please contact Worksafe, telephone 1800 136 089. Do not take them to the collection centre.

Waste education officer, Peter Collins, said that the ‘Detox Your Home’ collection was the ideal way to dispose of many unwanted hazardous products such as aerosol cans, insect sprays, polishing products cleaning products, pharmaceuticals, mothballs, paints, paint strippers, fertilisers, and fungicides.

"Go through the home, workshop, garage and garden shed and seek out all kinds of chemical and hazardous products which are unlikely to ever be used again, and have them disposed of in a proper manner," Mr Collins suggested.

"There are all kinds of household nasties that accumulate over a number of years that are unwanted, cause harm to the environment when disposed of inappropriately, and are often a risk to young children. This collection is the perfect opportunity to get rid of them.

"Weed killers, transmission fluid, fuels, oils, acids alkalis, photographic chemicals, gas cylinders, old car batteries and pool chemicals can all be disposed of safely by taking them along to the householders collection.

"Householders can just turn up at the council depot on the day. The only proviso is that no single item can exceed 20 litres," Mr Collins added.
