Chinese visitors learn more about Council

Key functions of local government were showcased for Chinese delegates from the City of Taizhou who were recently hosted by Latrobe City Council.

As part of Latrobe City’s on-going sister city relationship with the City of Taizhou in Jiangsu Province, seven delegates were involved in workshops where Council’s marketing and planning strategies were explained.

According to Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Lisa Price, this was the first time a Taizhou delegation was able to take an opportunity to learn more about how Council actually functions.

"We selected two key areas and Council officers presented an outline of how we go about marketing the City as well as what our planning unit does. Each session explained the why, what and how of each of these units.

"I know the City of Taizhou is becoming more interested in understanding about the functions of local government in Australia. With our long-standing, strong sister city connection with Taizhou, this latest visit presented an ideal chance for further exploration into these functions.

The delegates also visited Monash University Gippsland and the Gippsland Education Precinct. These visits carried on the long established interest in Latrobe City’s education capabilities.

"There are students from Taizhou studying at Traralgon College and we hope there will be more in the near future. The Gippsland Education Precinct is another of our education facilities well placed to provide a seamless education perhaps with either a strong academic or vocational focus or even both," Cr Price said.

"Our sister city relationship with Taizhou celebrates its ten year anniversary in May next year. This is a significant achievement and the recent visit of officials from Taizhou continues a strong tradition of both cities learning from each other. Together with Latrobe City’s long established sister city relationship with Takasago in Japan, our association with Taizhou has proven to be quite educational in terms of cultural exchanges," Cr Price concluded.
