How Kevin Rudd’s Affordable Child Care Plan will work for Gippsland families.

Labor candidate for Gippsland, Jane Rowe has applauded Kevin Rudd’s commitment to increase childcare assistance to Australian Families. Ms Rowe, herself a working mum, said that working families in Gippsland were ‘under pressure like never before, working longer and harder just to make ends meet’.

"On top of high petrol prices, mortgage repayments and the cost of groceries, the cost of child care has spiralled thus adding to the financial pressure on working families" Ms Rowe said.

"And all Mr Howard’s can say is that "working families in Australia have never been better off"

"It’s a view now being parroted by his cabinet colleague, Peter McGauran". she said.

"They are both so out of touch with ordinary working families".

Ms Rowe said that the Liberal and National Parties had become complacent on the real issues facing working families.

Ms Rowe said that Kevin Rudd and Labor understood that one of the best things you can do to help working families is to address the real costs of child care.

"Labor’s Affordable Child Care Plan will help working families with a $1.5 billion investment to lower costs", Ms Rowe said.

Labor’s plan will:

  • Increase the Child Care Tax Rebate from 30 per cent to 50 per cent, meaning that half of a family’s total out of pocket child care costs will be met every year, up to $7,500 a year per child.
  • Ensure that the rebate will be paid every three months, instead of once a year, helping working families to keep on top of cost of living expenses.

"This policy is yet another indication of Kevin Rudd’s alternative view on how a Federal Labor Government would ‘share the benefits created by the hard work of ordinary Australians’" Ms Rowe said.

"Kevin Rudd offers a clear choice. His plan is to make affordable child care a national priority for the future".

Under Federal Labor’s Affordable Child Care Plan the combination of Child Care Benefit and Labor’s 50% Child Care Tax Rebate means that:

Ø      A family with an income of $80,000 and one child in long day care for 40 hours a week will receive almost $1,500 of additional assistance each year – 66 per cent of their total child care costs will be covered by a Rudd Labor Government.

Ø      A family with an income of $50,000 and one child in long day care for 40 hours a week will receive more than $1,000 of additional assistance each year – 76 per cent of their total child care costs will be covered by a Rudd Labor Government.

Ø      A family with an income of $35,000 and one child in long day care for 20 hours a week will receive $330 of additional assistance each year - 85 per cent of their total child care costs will be covered by a Rudd Labor Government.
