Prepare. Act. Survive

Bass Coast Shire Council is encouraging all residents to use Bushfire Action Week (11 to 18 October) to start preparations for the coming fire danger period.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 9th October 2009 - Back to News

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr John Duscher, said all residents should prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan and work out what they will do in the event of an emergency.

"Whether it’s a house fire or a bushfire, all residents should have a plan and know what they are going to do, where they are going to go and how they are going to get there," said Cr Duscher.

"And Bushfire Action Week is good time to make sure you’ve got your plans in place.

"Throughout the fire danger period, properties in the Shire should be kept well maintained. To assist residents, Council’s tips and transfer stations will take green waste free of charge from 1 November to 14 December.

"We should all use this week to work out what work needs to be completed around our properties."

The new 10/30 Right allows residents to remove any vegetation within ten metres of their house or any vegetation (other than trees) within 30 metres of their house.

"Vegetation plays an important role in setting the character of our area and unnecessary removal of plants and trees has the potential to severely impact our environment.

"Major vegetation removal can be expensive and may be an unnecessary reaction to the fire risk so we recommend seeking expert advice before embarking on any major vegetation removal," explained Cr Duscher.

Working with your neighbours and community is good way to ensure everyone is prepared.

The CFA’s Community Fireguard is a fire safety education program that teaches residents to plan for a bushfire and manage their own risk.

"Communities must work together and work with fire agencies to prepare for the fire season.

"Increasing your knowledge and understanding of fire danger is a great way to ensure you and your family are prepared," continued Cr Duscher.
