Protest At Parliament, Not Our Forests: Ingram

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has backed calls for anti-logging activists to immediately cease disrupting legal forest harvesting in East Gippsland and take their protest to the steps of Parliament House.

Speaking from Parliament House today, Mr Ingram said this week’s blockades in far East Gippsland forests served no other purpose than to disrupt the lawful activities of local timber workers.

"Everyone has a right to protest, but these activities are completely missing the mark," Mr Ingram said.

"This issue is about forest policy, so these activists should be taking their concerns directly to the steps of Parliament House rather than disrupting the rights of local timber workers who are going about their lawful business of harvesting a renewable resource from our forests.

"Given that most of these extremists are poached from Melbourne anyway, it makes sense that the protest should be based in the city to enable our local contractors to get on with their work and to also reduce unnecessary strain on our local police and resources from other government departments.

"I support the calls made by Timber Communities Australia to end these protests and allow local timber workers to go about their lawful business," Mr Ingram said.
