Improving walking in Baw Baw

Baw Baw Shire Council recently conducted an audit on the ‘walkability’ of six towns across the shire and results show that many towns do not rate well for use by pedestrians.

Whilst aspects of the report were positive, steps need to be taken to address a number of issues, according to council chief executive officer, Mr Glenn Patterson.

"The report focuses on each town and includes the problems that lead to a poor environment for pedestrians and recommendations which will need to be discussed at community and policy levels," said Mr Patterson.

"Indicators of poor pedestrian environments from the report include inconsistency of speed limit signage, lack of protected road crossings, generally poor access to railway stations, lack of footpaths and traffic speed.

"The report covers Warragul, Drouin, Trafalgar, Yarragon, Neerim South and Longwarry and indicates that many towns have similar issues in terms of walkability.

"This report has been discussed at council and will now be presented to the community.

"Town meetings will be held over the coming months to gauge community interest and support on the recommendations tabled in the report," said Mr Patterson.
