The DSE Manager of the Project, Andrew Sharpe, said the new Trail offers spectacular forest and ocean views along with many historical attractions. The story of how the original tramway, which is the basis of the trail, was used for transporting pink granite incorporated in the construction of the Entrance to the Gippsland Lakes is interpreted along the route.

The information on these boards also identifies the Trail and gives users orientation as to where they are and the distance they have travelled.

The Trail, a high standard, compacted gravel trail, intersects with the East Gippsland Rail Trail, 11 kms east of Bruthen and runs 17 kms through beautiful, scenic forest alongside Mississippi Creek until it meets Scrivener Rd and Lakes Colquhoun Rd when it takes travellers the next eight kms into Lakes Entrance.

"Of interest along the Trail is the Log Crossing picnic area and links to the Forestech campus of East Gippsland TAFE, on the Princes Highway which is an important visitor set off point for the Trail," Andrew said.

Cyclists and walkers can enjoy a combination of circuits along the Trail with main rides being 66 kms from Bairnsdale to Lakes Entrance, or 36 kms from Bruthen via the East Gippsland Rail Trail to Lakes Entrance. Nowa Nowa can also be reached along the Rail Trail to the east.

"We’ve been told that this Trail is the best in the state and we plan to ensure that it lives up to its reputation," Andrew said.
