Good design for a healthy future

Baw Baw Shire Council has held forums with external surveyors, councillors and staff to explain and emphasise the benefits that healthy and safe urban design can have in increasing levels of physical activity in the community.

Urban design plays an important role in encouraging residents to become active, said council chief executive officer Glenn Patterson.

"Diseases relating to inactivity kill over 8000 Australians a year. Increasing participation in physical activity can go a long way to creating a healthier society," said Mr Patterson

"The public health bill is astronomical," said Mr Patterson. "The costs of poor health make this an important issue to local, state and federal governments.

"Through sound urban design, we can create neighbourhoods with plenty of open spaces, safe walking and cycling tracks and parks that people can enjoy visiting," said Mr Patterson.

"Council is committed to improving health and safety in the Baw Baw Shire and we believe that local government play an important role in getting our community active."

The Department of Sustainability and Environment is currently reviewing the planning scheme provisions for residential subdivision which it says will include requirements to provide for improved pedestrian access, safety and links between existing and future open space.
