Community Welcomes New Waste Vouchers

More than 200 of the newly issued free waste vouchers have so far been used at landfills in Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance, according to East Gippsland Shire.

By East Gippsland Shire - 27th August 2007 - Back to News

Waste coordinator Megan Dennett said the Shire’s facilities were inundated with trailer and ute loads of green and hard waste on the first weekend after the vouchers were issued with the annual rate notices.

"Some were used on the same day they were received and we have been averaging about 20 trailer loads a day each since then," she said.

"From what we can judge the new vouchers have been an immediate ‘hit’ with the community and they have been used virtually non-stop ever since."

Ms Dennett said the new system that provides each resident in the kerbside collection scheme with three green waste and one hard waste voucher was created when the community declined a proposed green waste bin collection option.

"In the survey undertaken last year we canvassed the option of introducing a green waste collection service for about $50 per household," she said.

"However, fewer than 20 percent of respondents were prepared to pay for the service."

"Rather than do nothing about green waste disposal we introduced the system that at no cost to the community provides vouchers with a value at current tipping fee rates of $43.00.

"Based on community response we seem to have hit the mark," she said.

Ms Dennett said there had been a number of enquiries about what would happen to the old 240 litre garbage bins when they were exchanged for the new 120 litre units in September.

"They will all be collected and sorted into three categories," she said.

"Those that are damaged will be sent to Melbourne to be recycled, those in the best condition will be kept by the Council and the balance will be made available to the community at $20 each for personal use such as for conversion into compost bins or to store excess waste."
